Business Model and Strategic Plan Essays Business Model and Strategic Plan Essay Business Model and Strategic Plan Essay For any journey the way must be defined with clear and recognizable inside informations for it to be successful. The constructs of markers and landmarks which define the way of a journey apply to that of any concern. We need elaborate programs and aims every bit good as landmarks and waies we would wish the concern to go. The aim of Two Brothers nutrient truck is to make a sure and popular topographic point for people of the Wenatchee vale to bask a quality repast utilizing locally sourced goods and services at a value which all occupants of the vale can easy afford. With this elaborate strategic concern program we will discourse the constructs which will steer our program and the obstructions we may confront and how we will work to get the better of them. Strategic Objectives. Measures. and Targets The aim is the same in all concern and that is to maintain the concern operational and profitable. The profitableness of any concern is the chief ground for which we strive to open and run concerns ; this fact will be the chief ground to implement cardinal fiscal aims. The construct of Two Brothers nutrient truck is to maintain costs low. maximise net incomes while keeping quality ingredients and service to the consumer. The chief factor which manner affect the profitableness of the nutrient truck is locally sourcing fresh ingredients due to the grow rhythm of our part. At some point the truck will hold to buy points from a seller or local grocer to keep stock list degrees. However the other bill of fare ingredients like staff of lifes. meats. and dairy points will in most instances be readily available thanks in portion to the handiness to local meatmans and dairies. we plan on baking our ain staff of lifes. Thankss to the deficiency of competitory eating houses utilizing locally so urced points we see no issues with these points. Methods of Monitoring and Controlling Two Brothers Strategic Plan We understand the importance of a happy employee and their relation to happy clients and relationships play a major function in any concern. We strive to construct relationships with the community and topographic point high respect on individualized service to each individual that visits Two Brothers whether it our invitees are local or people sing the Wenatchee vale. One major manner we intend to guarantee this will go on is to ever authorise our staff and do our staff feel like they are portion of this concern and steer them to experience as emotionally invested in the thoughts and constructs of Two Brothers nutrient truck as we do. We plan to offer inducements like displacement repasts. paid clip off after clip invested in the company. net income sharing. company events. and fillips for college pupils whom receive exceeding classs. we feel the nutrient truck should be a stepping rock and an illustration of features they can take with them into their callings. We feel that puting the clip and energy in our staff and demoing them we care every bit much about them as we do the concern will promote them to experience the same and want to put clip and energy in our clients to guarantee their return concern and the clients overall satisfaction. Selling and Information Technology Strategies and Tacticss In today’s epoch of societal media and more and more people utilizing their nomadic devices for mundane operations we feel we need to keep that connexion. Fortunately for Two Brothers nutrient truck the Wenatchee vale is comparatively little and offers great coverage for nomadic informations with most bearers. We would wish to take that a measure farther and offer a Wi-Fi hot topographic point every bit good as bear downing Stationss for most devices. we would wish to power these points utilizing chiefly solar energy to add to the construct of a sustainable civilization we are seeking to keep with the concern. We understand the importance of engineering and societal media in the operations of concern and how engineering can be an assistance in our concern operations. We plan on concentrating our attending on sites like Facebook. Instagram. and other societal media mercantile establishments to publicize our concern which will supply the client with day-to-day information on spe cials every bit good as entree to voucher plans we provide. Using societal media will supply an mercantile establishment for our clients to supply reappraisals and feedback on our concern. Many people feel that bad reappraisals can ache a concern ; we feel that bad reappraisals provide an chance for us to do a new friend and alter a procedure which may harm our concern with future invitees. Two brothers would besides wish to develop a smartphone application for Io and Android which we find is besides missing with many concerns in the Wenatchee vale. This application will besides supply instant entree to our concern every bit good as allowing us track our market. Equally far as marketing outside of societal media we plan to trade name our image utilizing points like auto clings. bumper spines. vesture. and sponsorship of local squad athleticss. we feel that the Wenatchee vale is a closely knit tight community and word of oral cavity and these ocular cues will go fast into doing Two Brothers a family name in the Wenatchee vale. Ethical. Legal. and Regulatory Issues Regulative conditions for nomadic nutrient service entities like Two Brothers nutrient truck are instead rigorous in the Wenatchee vale. We will necessitate to concentrate on consumer safety within the respects of the ordinances put away by the local wellness section and maintain or equipment and employee paperwork to stay compliant with these criterions. Another of import component of the nutrient truck will be a base of operations where we store merchandise and homework for twenty-four hours to twenty-four hours operations. This installation will besides hold to fall within the guidelines set Forth by the wellness territory to guarantee nutrient and consumer safety. Two Brothers besides plan to offer beer and vino at some point in the future operations of our nutrient truck which is lawfully allowed in Washington State. We will besides hold to follow the guidelines set Forth by the Liquor Control Board which are supervising degrees of service. age appropriate patronage. and guaranting on premiss ingestion merely. All of these facets will be factored into our operational inside informations and ordinances will be posted per Washington State RCW’s. Business Model and Strategic Plan Part I The end is to convey a cross subdivision of favourite nutrients to the community. Some of these will dwell of a local high school favorite the Zombie. The Zombie is downy dough stuffed with a assortment of meats and cheeses so baked to flawlessness. Other culinary options will include the popular Cuban sandwich every bit good as bratwursts. homemade fried poulet. fresh cut french friess. and several types of wings and sauces. The end is to convey in every bit much locally adult points every bit good as utilizing local suppliers for most of our points. maintaining it place grown is one of our slogans. We besides plan and scratch doing as many points as we can to supply the highest quality and freshest merchandise possible. another construct missing in our town. The end is to convey the highest quality nutrients for the most sensible monetary value that we can. I our thought will be to closely follow what Costco tries to convey to their clients. The ends of Two Brothers nutrient truck are to convey points to clients with small or no entree within walking distance to their locations. We will foreground our runing times to guarantee each location we stop at will hold ample clip to order and have their points in a manner congruent with their clip frame. We will besides supply an Order Early option via text. electronic mail. and phone orders so that clients will be able to short-circuit lines and pick up points whilst on the spell. Wenatchee is a smaller mid-size market with many concerns and norm options for speedy tiffin options. Wenatchee offers the same fast nutrient and insouciant dining as larger metropoliss with a scattering of ma and dad eating houses which make up the remainder of the options none of which offer high quality ingredients with sensible pricing constructions it is normally either quality or just monetary value. Two Brothers will carry through both high quality and just pricing by runing on volume gross revenues to travel concern. The program for Two Brothers is to manus trade all possible nutrient points to cut costs and increase quality of our merchandises because we believe that the more custodies something touches through the supply concatenation the more cost it involves in the terminal merchandise. This will put us apart from most other options locally and make an sum of exclusivity of market. What will besides assist Two Brothers is the comparative deficiency of nutrient trucks within the Wenatchee valley country. We plan to monopolise this fact and make a construction where we remain the top rival with first to market entry with place baked staff of lifes. oven roasted meats. and locally grown green goods ( when available ) . We will market on our committedness for high quality. monetary value friendly foods which focal point on household and togetherness. The vision that I see for the Two Brothers is for it to turn into a household tally concern with possibly two to three locations in entire in the va le. maintain it home grown and back up the vale by remaining true to household. friends. and community. While the quality and repute of the constitution are paramount. so is the success of net income. Once I am able to demo continued growing and a solid net income borders the possibilities are illimitable for enlargements. Are good net income border will besides let for committednesss like patronizing a small conference squad. giving us a positive public image. The guiding rules or values would be to remain true to myself stay grounded if the concern does go a success. and maintain my promise to the clients by supplying them with fresh nutrient and a merriment experience at Two Brothers. The civilization of the concern reflects my civilization and that of my household. and when I say civilization I mean that of esteeming everyone whom we interact with. We will hold a diverse bill of fare because I want a diverse crowd. The societal duty and moralss would be doing certain we merely provide fresh ingredients. merely buy from the best. and neer function anything that is subpar our internal slogan is create what you would desire to eat. I will non waver to take the chance to do things right and apologise on behalf of the concern. ever dainty others the manner I want to be treated. and with regard. The concern can non be a success if the mission or vision statement is non merely followed but besides if the staff and proprietors do non advance what they inspire. The vision is to hold the concern grow. but it can make merely that if the clients are treated with regard. We as a concern must maintain our word or promises on the service and merchandises we say we will present on. For the concern to be successful every promise made must be followed up by non merely the proprietors. but besides by staff. and those who we conduct concern with Two Brothers. The lone manner to keep a competitory advantage over larger concatenation eating houses. sandwich stores. and fast nutrient articulations. is to maintain the promise we made in our mission statement. and go on to remain focused on what is most of import. the client. Strategic Plan Part II: SWOTT Analysis The concern universe of today the rate of a concern succeeding is far outweighed by the rate at which they fail and this needs to be understood when set abouting these enterprises. One of these factors to success or to failure is external factors and how they will work in the operations of a concern. In this paper there will be a definition of some external factors for the Two Brothers nutrient truck and how good the concern adapts to these factors. We will analyse the supply concatenation and every bit good as the operations into consideration along with the designation of other issues and chances that may go on. Economic. Legal and Regulatory Forces and Trends One of the biggest drive external forces that can impact my concern is the demand for people to cognize where their nutrient is coming from and that it is a good and healthy pick for them. Today’s focal point on fleshiness has many people turning off from the fast nutrient ironss like McDonald’s and turning to options like Chipotle for healthier options and knowledge that their nutrient is coming from first-class beginnings and is handpicked every bit good as made fresh day-to-day. The Wenatchee Valley is really compact so the ability for people to go for tiffin is easy except the lone existent options are fast nutrient eating houses ruling a big per centum of the picks. Because these wellness tendencies are highly popular among the many in the vale it is wise to include societal factors of healthy life are a immense positive tendency for the nutrient trucks fresh doctrine. The active population of the vale is more likely to be wellness witting because it is the end to be in form and tantrum with the sum of out-of-door diversion in the vale and environing countries. Therefore. by eating healthy homemade options provided by the truck. the mean Wenatchee occupant is a positive external force. Competitive analysis as an external force that we can utilize to mensurate the possibility of success or failure or tendencies which may impact the concern. Since the nutrient truck is in the Wenatchee vale and we are known for our agricultural history there is a big population of Hispanics thanks in portion to the long history agribusiness and the demand for skilled labour. Mexican culinary art and Taco trucks are rather prevailing in the country and a different manner nutrient truck would be an outlier among the usual fast nutrient ironss and the family-owned eating houses. This provides an advantage as the nutrient truck has something new. and different to offer. In add-on. the eating house is nomadic and can be available in assorted countries gives it advantages over eating houses and most other nutrient trucks since most are chiefly stationary and no longer Mobile. Because the nutrient truck will be in a nomadic we can monopolise countries where many people work with the least sum of nutrient options available. we have to provide to them this manner and offer a speedy high quality option for tiffin. The Wenatchee vale besides has many musca volitanss for tourer researching attractive forces of the metropolis and events that could back up the nutrient truck. Since the warms temperatures of the vale in the summer and the mild winters. I expect people to at least halt for nutrient or for something to imbibe twelvemonth unit of ammunition every bit good as finally going a finish topographic point for locals. External technological forces/trends could travel either manner depending on how the concern is opened. First feelings do matter – every bit much as concerns do non desire them excessively particularly in the epoch of societal media. Wenatchee is a smaller town so word of oral cavity spreads rapidly via sites like Facebook. Instagram. and Craigslist so in this state of affairs. it is really of import that the nutrient truck makes a strong first feeling. Besides the local newspaper is a popular beginning of information to the vale and possibly some kind of voucher or trade in the newspaper would be a good manner to pull occupants to the eating house. Because the written portion of paper has its opposite number on the web. on-line advertisement would likely be an attractive option in pulling the many tourers which visit the metropolis all twelvemonth unit of ammunition. Supply Chains Organizations Impacts Sing the resource logistics for any concern. a strong force that can negatively/positively impact the nutrient truck is the cost of transit of stuffs. Originally. the program was to manus choice fresh stuff daily through local agriculturists and sellers. However. this would be inefficient and highly expensive. It makes more sense that these stuff are obtained from a local beginning which can present on a hebdomadal footing. These points should be points that would decidedly hold to be locally or regionally located because they have to lend to the bargain local stay local subject. For illustration. the veggies would chiefly be locally grown within the season and meats locally purchased and regionally harvested while any adust goods would be homemade by us utilizing regionally sourced stuffs. Designation of Issues or Opportunities Culture Culture is another internal force. which can do the nutrient truck a great and popular option. Having a family-owned concern with a little group of friendly employees makes a immense difference in how a local concern is perceived. Hiring employees who non associate good with the concern proprietors by and large consequences in employees perform their responsibilities but may non love the concern or take portion in the enjoyment that the proprietors may hold in runing the concern ; in other words. these employees will make their occupation but they will non hold the passion that household has runing the concern. Generally. the friendly service that clients will have from the food shop will probably be an inducement for them to return once more. The feeling should be loosen uping adequate that clients will desire to go on to hang out after their repast if they have the clip. Over clip. topographic points like these go a kind of favorite hang out for people ; this is really similar to how bars become topographic points where people can hangout and loosen up while socialising and eating. With engineering being so prevailing and because this is a tight knit vale. it is expected that people will hold privation to socialise so supplying portable seating will be an of import component. Leadership Leadership is an indispensable portion of any concern and can take to better efficiency. It’s really of import for the concern to hold a good set of leaders. In a little concern state of affairs the leaders should be the proprietors. there is a sense of heat and gratitude when being greeted and served by the owners/operators. Sometimes. a client may inquire a certain inquiry that requires a spot of prerequisite cognition about a certain type of nutrient or merchandise and to reply the inquiry. When the proprietors are available. and a portion of the general operations. that cognition is passed on the other employees when the proprietor is functioning invitees. Good leading besides is built-in to doing a concern tally swimmingly. There normally has to be person in charge that can direct people around in instance they are lost. In this instance. if an employee is doing a certain merchandise and is confused on how to complete it or go on with it. the proprietor can normally step in and assistance in the completion of the merchandise. Therefore. a good leader will run the concern in a smooth mode while the deficiency of a leader can ensue in the concern losing money because of client dissatisfaction ( due to jobs such as inordinate delay for nutrient. bad service. bad nutrient. etc. ) Scheme The internal scheme will be to maintain consumers pleased and to maintain their visit to the nutrient truck memorable so they would desire to come at that place once more. Operating the nutrient truck as a merriment household oriented concern will maintain people hopefully desiring to hangout and comeback for that household unfastened weaponries feel. Possibly supplying out-of-door games and events will give the client something to maintain them occupied and bask their stay. To maintain the bill of fare a spot alone. there would be a diversified bill of fare by functioning specific options and specials on different yearss of the hebdomad. There would besides be inducements provided in the signifier of price reductions. clout cards and options for providing a big group of people. such as parties. nuptialss or other events. Economic Economic forces and tendencies that can profit or work against the nutrient truck are most decidedly included the monetary value of oil and monetary values of natural stuffs. Because transit is a must in any concern to convey points to the truck and the truck to the clients. lifting gas monetary values will ache concern and cost more. Similarly. a deficiency of local points in the country will besides worsen the state of affairs and raise monetary values of natural stuffs to be used by the nutrient truck. Nice conditions in the summer and good snow in the winter addition the draw of touristry to the vale this would increase the figure of possible clients increasing concern. Regulatory In respects to regulative forces/trends that would impact this concern would be the wellness review and how they regulate length of clip a certain merchandise is fresh. As an illustration. if wellness ordinances of nutrient trucks are normally more rigorous and regulated than say a brick and howitzer concern since the nutrient truck has the ability to go nomadic and the options of safe storage of nutrients is limited more so than the regular eating house. By non following wellness processs and safety. Torahs would be broken and there would be the hazard of the concern shutting or people being hurt by contaminated nutrients. Because this is a little nutrient truck concern. it would non be excessively hard to do alterations unless the alterations are utmost – like the alteration matching to the dependable sourcing of local goods. Making alterations to the bill of fare or doing different points is normally merely a alteration in how a certain merchandise is prepared. Because nutrient trucks normally provide nutrient made on premiss and is easy adaptable to many points this will non be really hard if alterations needed to be made. However. if people were to inquire for peculiar points or drinks these would hold to be purchased and that could take some clip for bringing. The nutrient truck is a little graduated table concern ; it is easier to use alterations than it is for bigger concerns that may be spread out in several locations. Global The most recent planetary issue for most concern right now is the monetary value of oil. Gas keeps the trucks traveling and the equipment runing whether they are purchasing points. operating as in cooking nutrient points. or traveling from location to location gas is an ineluctable cost and lifting monetary values could present a menace to the sustainability of the concern. Other options of clean energy can be examined to guarantee the best operating options for the concern. Procedures and Systems Supplying great service seems about absurd as every concern strives to make so. Small concerns have to do greater paces in this section. Consistency is the key in order to be consistent a system or procedure is needed for every item. When there are definite processs for the mundane undertakings the employees and the clients know what to anticipate. For case the gap and shutting processs will hold specific undertakings and responsibilities every twenty-four hours. This type of consistence will maintain a positive impulse. Strategic Plan Part III: Balanced Scorecard The ground an person opens a concern is to be successful and do a net incomes to supply as their support. My vision and my mission for my concern are to be one of the most popular nutrient trucks in the Wenatchee Valley country. In add-on. should be a extremely well-thought-of concern and non merely another concern functioning nutrient. Geting to cognize the clients on a personal footing and turn out friendly service that is appreciable and that leaves client with a sense of superior service that keeps them coming back. But largely. the nutrient truck will supply great nutrient that people will bask to eat and hunger. The vision for the nutrient truck is to see it unfastened and available to go to multiple locations throughout the Wenatchee Valley so that the full vale can entree the unique options we offer. Fiscal Position Because the initial location will be near the chief medical installation and high school in the southern portion of the vale. it can keep a considerable market portion over other eating houses in that country of the vale since no other locations exists. After that the fiscal positions include market portion. the vision influences the market portion in this manner and it allows for sweetening of profitableness and the competitory place. More eating houses around the vale use the same supply concatenation operations that the initial nutrient truck would hold. maintaining the costs comparatively the same. Increasing the figure of nutrient trucks would. besides help to take down monetary values of natural stuffs because the concern would be purchasing larger measures for more trucks and usage volume pricing. This in bend would cut down the cost of disbursement but would increase the net incomes. The mission values are to supply great savoring nutrient to a big assortment of people of different societal groups and to supply great service. To accomplish such a end. it is really necessary that some aims for client service and employee satisfaction are put into topographic point. Employee Perspective Obviously. the sum of satisfaction that the employees will hold will interpret to a higher degree of service they provide to clients. Therefore. increasing employee satisfaction is a must for the nutrient truck. Stimulating and offering inducements to the employees is a great manner to maintain them productive. A method of exciting the employees would be to revolve the responsibilities. A rotary motion of responsibilities ensures that all of the employees understand the maps of the different Stationss but they besides understand all the cleaning responsibilities as good and cognizing each station helps in the overall apprehension of the concern. This. in bend. affects their productiveness and how they relate to the clients. The satisfied clients. in bend. helped to heighten the customer’s value position in countries such as client keeping and client value. Supplying warm. friendly service is an plus to the nutrient truck will hold and will put it apart from other options in th e vale. Customer Perspective An aim that should be maintained is to maintain the same degree of service and client satisfaction traveling throughout clip. Ways to mensurate client satisfaction is how clients react to the nutrient truck on societal media sites such as Facebook and Craigslist or frequence in which they visit. Offering a punch card with a wages is manner to mensurate the frequence that they visit the nutrient truck. Obviously. a bulk of people patronizing the nutrient truck signifies that the truck is a popular finish and signifies the mass popularity of the truck. Detecting alterations in tendencies can assist an proprietor to understand where jobs may be. An of import strategic aim that should be respected in the organisation of the nutrient truck is maintaining service quick and without any fuss and maintains a high degree of quality and service. Procedure of Internal Operations To accomplish this aim. the nutrient truck needs to. once more. keep a fast and dependable service program for the company. This requires be aftering. as the employees need expeditiously to bring forth the merchandise that the client wants. This is non merely embracing the employee position but besides the client service position. Popular eating houses normally have a method through which they create menu points in an efficient mode. They create formulas and options on the bill of fare which staff and clients can utilize to steer their experience and production procedures. This orderly method that will be developed is indispensable for the concern to run decently because it reduces the work that the employees do and allows the client more freedom in taking how they want their nutrients prepared every bit good as options available. In add-on. I feel like this will be a necessary characteristic of the nutrient truck because other eating house concerns functioning nutrient create points from assorted ingredients and formulas will besides be bring forthing their merchandises in a similar process. Therefore. to maintain competitory and streamlined to concern patterns of the industry this method should besides be used in the nutrient truck. Decision Planing and constructing a strategic aim is a important component for any concern to run successfully in the universe today. Making a mission statement with clear and defined aims will assist steer the concern through their operations and should be looked to systematically to keep the aims set Forth by the concern Godheads. By making this the direction and operations of the concern will be understood and how the concern relates in the market place and how to run through growing and handle rivals. A foundation of aims will keep the nucleus construct of the concern when alterations or displacements in the market topographic point occur and when new schemes need to be developed to manage these alterations. The foundation of any concern operation is the consumer and the major influence on whether they become a client for life is the employee. These two factors are the direct drivers for any concern and their felicity can convey about failure or guarantee success. When the mission and nucleus values are established and clear so it becomes easier for these two factors to supply the success concerns need to stay operational and sustainable. Mention Pearce. 5 Classic and Heartbreaking Slave Narratives

5 Classic and Heartbreaking Slave Narratives Slave narratives became an important form of literary expression before the Civil War, when about 65 memoirs by former slaves were published as books or pamphlets. The stories told by former slaves helped to stir public opinion against slavery. The Most Interesting Slave Narratives The prominent abolitionist Frederick Douglass first gained widespread public attention with the publication of his own classic slave narrative in the 1840s. His book and others provided vivid firsthand testimony about life as a slave. A slave narrative published in the early 1850s by Solomon Northup, a free black New York resident who was kidnapped into slavery, aroused outrage. Northups story has become widely known from the Oscar-winning film, 12 Years a Slave,  based on his searing account of life under the cruel slave system of Louisiana plantations. In the years following the Civil War, about 55 full-length slave narratives were published. Remarkably, two more recently-discovered slave narratives were published in November 2007. The authors listed wrote some of the most important and widely-read slave narratives. Olaudah Equiano The first noteworthy slave narrative was The Interesting Narrative of the Life of O. Equiano, or G. Vassa, the African, which was published in London in the late 1780s. The book’s author, Olaudah Equiano, had been born in present-day Nigeria in the 1740s. He was taken into slavery when he was about 11 years old. After being transported to Virginia, he was purchased by an English naval officer, given the name Gustavus Vassa, and offered the opportunity to educate himself while serving as a servant aboard ship. He was later sold to a Quaker merchant and given a chance to trade and earn his own freedom. After buying his freedom, he traveled to London, where he settled and became involved with groups seeking the abolition of the slave trade. Equiano’s book was notable because he could write about his pre-slavery childhood in West Africa, and he described the horrors of the slave trade from the perspective of one of its victims. The arguments Equiano made in his book against the slave trade were used by British reformers who eventually succeeded in ending it. Frederick Douglass The best-known and most influential book by an escaped slave was The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which was first published in 1845. Douglass had been born into slavery in 1818 on the eastern shore of Maryland, and after successfully escaping in 1838, settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts. By the early 1840s, Douglass had come into contact with the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and became a lecturer, educating audiences about slavery. It’s believed that Douglass wrote his autobiography partly to counter skeptics who believed he must be exaggerating details of his life. The book, featuring introductions by abolitionist leaders William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips, became a sensation. It made Douglass famous, and he went on to be one of the greatest leaders of the American abolition movement. Indeed, the sudden fame was seen as a danger. Douglass traveled to the British Isles on a speaking tour in the late 1840s, partly to escape the threat of being apprehended as a fugitive slave. A decade later, the book would be enlarged as My Bondage And My Freedom. In the early 1880s, Douglass would publish an even larger autobiography, The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, Written by Himself. Harriet Jacobs Born into slavery in North Carolina in 1813, Harriet Jacobs was taught to read and write by the woman who owned her. But when her owner died, young Jacobs was left to a relative who treated her far worse. When she was a teenager, her master made sexual advances on her. Finally, one night in 1835, she attempted to escape. The runaway didn’t get far and wound up hiding in a small attic space above the house of her grandmother, who had been set free by her master some years earlier. Incredibly, Jacobs spent seven years in hiding, and health problems caused by her constant confinement led her family to find a sea captain who would smuggle her north. Jacobs found a job as a domestic servant in New York, but life in freedom was not without dangers. There was a fear that slave catchers, empowered by the Fugitive Slave Law, might track her down. She eventually moved on to Massachusetts. In 1862, under the pen name Linda Brent, she published her memoir Incidents in the Live of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself. William Wells Brown Born into slavery in Kentucky in 1815, William Wells Brown had several masters before reaching adulthood. When he was 19, his owner made the mistake of taking him to Cincinnati in the free state of Ohio. Brown ran off and made his way to Dayton. Here, a Quaker who did not believe in slavery helped him and gave him a place to stay. By the late 1830s, he was active in the abolitionist movement and was living in Buffalo, New York. Here, his house became a station on the Underground Railroad. Brown eventually moved to Massachusetts. When he wrote a memoir, Narrative of William W. Brown, a Fugitive Slave, Written by Himself, it was published by the Boston Anti-Slavery Office in 1847. The book was very popular and went through four editions in the United States. It was also published in several British editions. He traveled to England to lecture. When the Fugitive Slave Law was passed in the U.S., he chose to remain in Europe for several years, rather than risk being recaptured. While in London, Brown wrote a novel, Clotel; or the President’s Daughter. The book played upon the idea, then-current in the U.S., that Thomas Jefferson fathered a mulatto daughter who had been sold at a slave auction. After returning to America, Brown continued his abolitionist activities, and along with Frederick Douglass, helped recruit black soldiers into the Union Army during the Civil War. His desire for education continued, and he became a practicing physician in his later years. Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers Project In the late 1930s, as part of the Works Project Administration, field workers from the Federal Writers Project endeavored to interview elderly Americans who had lived as slaves. More than 2,300 people provided recollections, which were transcribed and preserved as typescripts. The Library of Congress hosts Born in Slavery, an online exhibit of the interviews. They are generally fairly short, and the accuracy of some of the material can be questioned, as the interviewees were recalling events from more than 70 years earlier. But some of the interviews are quite remarkable. The introduction to the collection is a good place to start exploring. Sources Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers Project. However, there has also been an increase in the greenhouse gas emissions which was about 1.6 percent (in 2003). Electricity generators are held responsible for this increase in the emissions. As far as the gas, water, and electricity companies are concerned, a fall in the emission of greenhouse gases has again seen. It ranges from about 218.6 million tonnes to 192.6 million tonnes from the year 1990 to 2003. The core cause is said to be the excessive use of natural gas instead of coal. However, underlying data show the altitude of greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity generators has augmented in current years. Emissions mounted 6. 7 per cent on the previous year as a result of the larger use of coal for production and a fall in the net level of electricity introduced via the inter-connector with France. Greenhouse gas emissions from the mechanized industries fell from 180.7 million tonnes to 129.3 million tonnes from 1990 to 2003, which is about a fall of 28.5 percent. On the other hand, emissions rose by 3.0 per cent from a low of 125.5 million tonnes (2003 and 2002). The recent increase replicates an increase in emanations from the metal making industries. The downward trend was more or less subjected to exceptions. For example, the emission of greenhouse gases from the transport and communication industries was 48.4 percent more than in 1990 that in 2003. The transport and communication industries were accountable for discharging, in 2003, the counterpart of 95.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide evaluated with 64.5 million tonnes in 1990. Their greenhouse gas releases rose 5.2 percent on 2002, largely reflecting the progressing rise in the number of UK owned ships subsequent

Book review for Eat A Bowl of Tea by Louis Chu Essay

Book review for Eat A Bowl of Tea by Louis Chu - Essay Example Louis Chu â€Å"†¦was born in Toishan, China, in October 1, 1915. Immigrated to the United States†¦.a master’s degree from New York University†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (4).One of the important characters in the story was Ben Loy the son of a â€Å"bachelor† father. After WWII, he was sent to mainland China to get married to his bride Mei Oi and after the marriage he returned to America but lost his sexual powers mysteriously and turned impotent. That was an arranged marriage by the parents of the bride and the bridegroom. Ah Song, a gambler and thug, made use of this opportunity of the sexual disability of Ben Loy and seduced Mei Oi. The story depicts the lifestyles of the people in China Town and the socio-cultural issues with the Chinese Americans of the time and their struggle for assimilation with the mainstream American society. It can be categorized as the social/cultural history of the Chinese Americans. The process of building up of a multicultural and multiethn ic Nation like America is complicated and is beset with many transformational problems. In between race and nation many ancillary issues like historical facts, gender and sexuality exert their presence and pressure strongly. This is validated by Louis Chu in this novel. On the other hand, the issues raked up in â€Å"Comfort Woman† by Okja Keller are more or less identical. Through the struggle of Ben Loy trying to strike the balance between China and America, the author depicts the issues with the Chinese American Society and their efforts to come out of the cocoon of the age-old Chinese traditions. Structural racism of the American system confronts him as he tries to better his economic and social prospectus within the limited opportunities and scarce resources. The scope is narrow and one is not allowed to transcend the limits set forth by the elders of the community. He is not allowed to be innovative and experiment with new business projects and to take independent decis ions. At the personal level he has sexual problems, may be as a consequence of pressure of handling the business that he does under compulsive circumstances and not with pleasure. The problems of Mei Oi were different. The sudden transplantation to the modern country, from a country that still practiced the middle-age traditions and values was like an electrical shock to her and she was finding it tough to come to terms with her new surroundings. She was not provided appropriate guidance and moral support from other female members of the Chinatown. Her husband’s impotency and the resultant depression took her to the portals of adultery for sexual fulfillment. Destiny played its part and things began to shape better when the couple moved to San Francisco, the American city to which the immigrants from China arrived first to make a fresh start in their life. They were able to integrate with the society better here and with that assimilation they began to make efforts for the fr uctification of their dreams. The pursuit of diversity became possible and the current issues took precedence in their lives and they began to enjoy the life of transformation and new joys sprouted forth in their lives. Destiny stuck the benevolent note this time and Jeffery Chan in his introduction to the book writes â€Å"Ben Loy regains his potency by eating a bowl of tea a regimen prescribed by an herbalist†

Race and ethnicity in the United States Census Essay Example for Free

Race and ethnicity in the United States Census Essay The media is an industry where the competition is intense and it has been used by the government individuals, organizations, institutions, society, and family etc. for various purposes. However, due to the increasing competition in the industry, many at times the functions and duties which the media owes to the society are significantly overlooked. There are various functions of the media some will be discussed later on in this paper. The aim of the media has to a fearfully large extent shifted from fulfilling its roles to the society, rather their focus is often on how much entertainment they can offer to their audience and how much money they can make and how quickly they can make it. Entertainment and money making is definitely key in the existence, survival and growth of this industry, nevertheless, this should not be achieved by inappropriately portraying a group’s identity in any form. DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS Construction – To make or create, by putting together ideas, components or arguments. Group Identity – This refers to a person’s sense of belonging to a group. Media- Are communication channels through which news, entertainment, education, data or promotional messages are disseminated. Media includes every broadcasting and narrow casting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax and internet (business dictionary, 2015). THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY BY TAJFEL TURNER (1979) This theory was propounded in order to understand the psychological reasons and basis for inter- group discrimination. The components of this theory goes thus: Categorization- This is the process of putting ourselves and others into categories, our self-image is associated with the categories we belong to. Identification – This is the process by which we associate ourselves with certain groups of people. Nevertheless there are some groups we don’t want to be identified with (out groups) and there are some we would want to be identified with (in groups). Comparison- This is the process through which we compare our groups with other groups, thereby creating a positive bias towards the groups in which we are members of. This aspect of this work will focus on two salient functions of the media amidst the various ones there are. Social heritage function- The onus lies on the media to transmit positive racial and ethnic values about every existing race and ethnic group. The act of highlighting and spotlighting the various negativities of races and ethnic groups should be avoided. Surveillance function- This is the duty the media owes to the society in circulating news and information when necessary, the media is responsible for providing information about events. THE CONSTRUCTION OF GROUP IDENTITY BY HOLLYWOOD (A STUDY OF THE LATINO RACE) There are five acclaimed races in the world: 1) Mongoloid (Asian and American Indian) 2) Caucasoid (European) 3) Australoid (Australian and oceanic) 4) Negroid (East African black). 5) Capoid (South African black) The Latinos could be said to belong to the Mongoloid race and most of the 315 million people who live in the United States of America are either immigrants or have ancestry to another country. In actual fact, the only truly American people are the Native ones. This country is based on the idea of migration in pursuit of a better social and economic life. According to U. S. Census Bureau (2012), there are roughly 52 million Hispanics/Latinos living in the United States, representing approximately 16. 7% of the total population of United States of America, and making them the nation’s largest ethnic minority. Among Hispanic subgroups, Mexicans rated as the largest at 63%, followed by Puerto Ricans (9. 2%), Cubans (3. 5%), Salvadorans (3. 3%), Dominicans (2. 8%), and the remaining 18. 2% were Colombians, Guatemalans, Portuguese, Honduras, Ecuadorians, Peruvians, Brazilian. The main reason for their migration has been either that they are politically endangered or have financial problems. For instance the Cubans who ended up in America wanted to escape from the political conditions in their country. Escaping from the communist government practiced in Cuba, they were considered as ‘political refugees’ in America for three and a half decades until 1995. As a result of America’s opposition to the Cuban government, they were treated in America better than almost any other ethnic group. This has also been partly because of their high level of education and professionalism before migration (Martins, 2006 as seen in Mousavi Sadeghi, 2013). Latinos, Mexicans in particular, mostly live in the Southwest; almost half in California and Texas. Puerto Ricans are mostly in the East and Cubans are in Florida. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, legal Hispanic household income is only 75 percent of White American income. There is also a high rate of poverty and unemployment among them, and their socio economic status is at a low level. The cause for this situation is partially their jobs being the lowest paid ones, their low education level, and employment discrimination (Camarillo and Bonilla, 2001). They are present in the news, advertisements, election campaigns, political debates, television and films. The common major feature that is present in all of these portrayals is the problems related to them that should be solved and not to be glorified, exaggerated or exploited by Hollywood. Before now African Americans were more likely to be portrayed as domestic workers in Hollywood. African Americans played major roles in television sitcoms such as â€Å"Beulah† in the 1950’s and â€Å"Gone with the wind† in 1939. In recent times Latinos have increasingly replaced African Americans as Hollywood domestics. Hollywood has presented an incorrect reality of the Latino people to the American people and to the world at large, it has exaggerated a poor image of this particular race. Although the Latinos who live in America get more roles to play in Hollywood, most of these roles are mentioned in the next paragraph. The Latino female is often presented as a temptress, vamp, lustful, promiscuous, unfaithful, manipulative, of loose morals or submissive at times in relation to a white male fantasy, low class, serving the whites. A list of Ten Latino Female artists who have played the role of a maid in Hollywood Movies/series. Jennifer Lopez – Maid in Manhattan, 2002 Aida Linares- Clueless, 1995 Lupe Ontiveros- As good as it gets, 1997 (She has played an estimate of 150 maid roles on television). Consuela-Family Guy, 2005-till present Nadine Valesquez-My name is Earl, 2005-2009 Paz Vega- Spanglish, 2004 Kate Del Castillo- La misma Luna, 2007 Adriana Barraza- Babel, 2006 Catalina Saavedra, The maid, 2009 Roselyn Sanchez, Devious Maids, 2013- till present Pania Ramirez – Devious Maids, 2013 till present THE MEDIA, DIVERSITY AND SOCIAL CHANGE INITIATIVE (MDSCI)’S SIX YEAR STUDY REVEALS SOME STATISTICS. Among the racial and ethnic groups studied in the Media, Diversity, and Social Change Initiative’s report, released August 2014, Latinos made up only 4. 9% of movie characters across 100 of 2013’s top-grossing films. According to the U. S. Census Bureau’s estimates, there are roughly 52 million Latinos in the U. S. as of July 1, 2011, or just over 16% of the current U. S. population. That number is on track to reach 132. 8 million — or about 30% of the U. S. population — by July 1, 2050. LATINOS THAT ARE DEPICTED IN TOP-GROSSING MOVIES ARE MOSTLY NAKED. While the study does note that â€Å"Hispanic females (37. 3%) were more likely to be featured in popular films than were white females (29. 6%) or Asian females (32%),† Latinas are also more likely than females among any of the other groups studied (37. 5%, to be precise) to be shown partially dressed or nude on the big screen. LATINOS ARE ALSO HIGHLY LIKELY TO BE SEXUALIZED. The sexualization of Latinos does not stop with women. Latino men were the most likely among the studied groups (16. 5%) to be depicted wearing â€Å"tight, alluring or revealing clothing. † DANGERS OF THE NEGATIVE PORTRAYAL OF RACE ETHNICITY BY THE MEDIA ? Since there is a tendency to believe what is represented or depicted by the media; as particular races or ethnic groups are often negatively portrayed, others who are not acquainted with such group of people are bound to believe they are actually the way the media has presented them. ?Another danger of negative portrayals of race/ethnic groups by the media is that the younger ones from such groups may not be able to see themselves better than the way the media has portrayed them. For example if a race is continually depicted as a maid or as vulgar murderer the younger generation of such groups may not see anything wrong with being that way and could actually end up as same. ? This particular race have existing challenges of employment, poor education; the continuous depictions as such does not help solve these problems, but only worsens them. ?It could be difficult for people who are negatively portrayed to keep relationships with or amongst other races who are depicted as superior to them. THE NOLLYWOOD CONSTRUCT OF ETHNICITY (A STUDY OF THE YORUBA, AND NORTHERN NIGERIANS) The founding fathers of Yoruba films in Nigeria i. e. Herbert Ogunde, Moses Olaiya (Baba Sala) Based their works on the constructive values of the Yoruba ethnic group without leaving their audience entertained. In recent times Nollywood has neglected the transfer of social heritage function in the production of Yoruba films. More often than necessary abusive statements, raining of curses and the invention of such and rascality has been synonymous with Yoruba films. The very rich Yoruba culture which the world could learn from is often being tarnished by our film industry. However there are various Yoruba producers who focus on spreading the positivity of the Yoruba culture i. e. Tunde Kelani, Tade Ogidan, Yinka Afolayan. Men from the Northern part of Nigeria are also often times portrayed as either a gateman or the security man of a well-established family. The character who could actually be Yoruba speaks like a man from the north to convince the audience that the gateman is a man from the Northern part of the Country. Little does Nollywood know that many of the gatemen in Lagos which I can speak for are not even Nigerians. I have observed that most of the gatemen/security men in reality are actually from Niger Republic many of them look like Nigerian Northerners, are able to speak Hausa language but they are not Nigerians. RECOMMENDATIONS ?Every race has some sort of value and norms that could be positive, the media should hereby seek out such and spread them. The media needs to respect the fact that every human person has dignity and should be portrayed as such. ?They never should never assume that a particular race or ethnicity is less than the other, regardless of the socio economic status of such groups. ?The media should seek to solve the challenges faced by some races and ethnic groups rather than exploit them. The media should be reminded that they are socially responsible to the society, thus they should be mindful of what they feed the society with.

Winckelmann Article :: essays research papers

In this article Winckelmann states that the good taste in art that is present in contemporary works stems from the work of the ancient Greeks. The beauty in the modern works of artists like Raphael (especially his Madonna and child with St Sixtus and St Barbara) hold such beauty, complexity of emotion, and good taste because he draws on the ideas set up by the great ancient sculptures and society in which they lived and drew inspiration from. Winckelmann categorizes the ancients greatness into two main ideas that are necessary for contemporaries to draw from in order to reach greatness: Natural beauty and noble simplicity and quiet grandeur.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Winckelmann like Vasari dealt greatly with the artistic problems concerning representation and imitation of nature including the need for the human beauty in a figure. However he also was interested in art criticism based in historical timelines and causes for the change and evolution of modern art. This greatly seen in this article not only in his thesis that great contemporary art is based in antiquity but also in his explanation for why the Greek art was so well done and why it has risen back into the hands of modern art. First, Greek work came back to contemporary society greatly by the monarch led by Titus who brought authentic work from Greek masters for his artists to learn from and imitate. He also discusses the correlation between the bodies, like that of the Theseus model, with the Greek lifestyle they lived based heavily on training for the Olympic games and the resemblance of youth’s bodies to godlike figures. Great masters of contemporary work use these same bodily model and ideal of beauty in their work. Winckelmann states that their present good taste is due to the fact that they, â€Å"partook of good taste at its source.† Overall the Greeks set up rules of art that could be imitated to capture nature and its ideal form of beauty, an idea that many sought to accomplish.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Greek’s images also possessed two important ideas that brought the soul of the artist and subject to the surface while still capturing the passion and action of the movement and story: noble simplicity and quiet grandeur. Greek images contained faces that were full of expression but were also balanced because they were not overcome by pain or passion because they still had nobility of soul which creates a sense of tranquility even in the midst of rage, fervor, or desire.

Kantian Ethics

After reading the Oil rig case, it is evident that the case presented an all too common example of violating sound ethical business behavior where humans are subjected to ill treatment, unsafe work condition, and total disregard for their welfare. In this paper, I will attempt to apply the Kantian Ethics principles to this case in order to determine what went wrong in this situation. Kantian ethics followers believe that motive is one of the most crucial elements to be analyzed when trying to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong in everyday situations.According to Immanuel Kant, the founder of Kantian ethics, a moral action is one that is performed out of a sense of duty and which is based on a sense of knowing what one â€Å"ought† to do under certain circumstances; therefore, a morally acceptable action is one that is never motivated by reward. One of the fundamental beliefs of the Kantian Ethics is the need to protect the employees and consumers by advocating that profit is not an end in itself. The above mentioned belief emphasizes the fact that organizations should not engage in exploiting consumers and employees for the sole reason to make profits. As such, and based on the Kantian Ethics guiding principles, the Stratton Oil Company is committing unethical acts against the African employees. The company engages in profit maximizing by exploiting the African laborers for long hours with poor living conditions, unsafe work environment, and mediocre evacuation plans. The Workers on this oil rigs, both on land and off-shore, are routinely exposed to health and safety hazards in an attempt to cut cost and maximize profits. The management team failed to implement a culture that fosters the employee's best interests.By putting a value on human dignity, the company has disdainfully treated its employees as a means to an end. The managing team regarded the risks associated with running this rig as acceptable which most definitely constitutes a major problem for Kant and his followers. Furthermore, Kant emphasizes that profits must be utilized to better the livelihood of all stakeholders to include but not limited to the shareholders, employees both African and Expatriates, the consumers they serve, and the environment they operate within. In this case, the company did not invest in the well being of the many African laborers as compared to the few expatriates. The company is not willing to spend additional funds to provide helicopter rides to the local employees for example, and continues to allow for eighteen hour boat trips following long working days at sea. Also, due to poor budgeting decision, the company elected not to provide proper medical attention to the locals and allowed for extreme medical measures such as finger and limb amputation as compared to reconstruction surgery provided to the expats.Obviously, the company recognizes the importance of preserving one's body organs but chose to implement policies that guarantee a better quality of life for some and the worst for others. Kant's second Categorical Imperative: (Humanity or End in Itself formulation) implies to â€Å"Act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end. would require safe working conditions, a decent wage for all people, and no discriminating treatment of foreign employees. The Stratton Oil Company has not behaved as law-making members of a kingdom of ends. Instead, they allowed a series of abuses in order to make a greater profit. Another aspect where this case fails the Kantian Ethics model is the fact that employees are also expected to work in a democratic manner where they are continuously contributing to all business decisions. The Kingdom of Ends principle implies that employees not only have a right to whistle blow but in fact it is their duty to do so. Kantian theory instructs people to act i n harmony with universally accepted rules. I believe that Kant would want an individual to stand firm in telling the truth, regardless of personal outcome. In our case, the Expats are violating an important Kantian Ethical principle by not reporting the unethical practices enforced by the company and encouraged by the expats themselves.Turning a blind eye to such practices not only goes against the primary goal of the Kantian philosophy but also would violate the basic virtues of honesty and courage. The Expats are in fact looking the other way in fear of loosing their current luxurious status, and even worst fearing the possible retaliation from the company. Throughout his writings, Kant explained that a business organization should be regarded as a manifestation of a moral community which, in turns, emphasizes the need for employers to treat their employees with care and with the upmost respect.Given the horrible living conditions provided to the African laborers as described in t he given case, it is evident that the Stratton Oil Company had built the African oil rig site on total disregard to any sense of community. Such observation is based on the clear disparity between the mediocre living conditions provided to the African laborers as compared to the luxurious living quarters provided to the few expatriates. Generally speaking, the life of an oil rig worker is unique in several respects.Workers spend few weeks at a time on the rig per stint and then transported back to land for about the same period off. Since the rigs are typically located hundreds of miles from the shore, it can be an isolating experience that some aren't emotionally equipped to handle. The management team recognizes the need for a better social life since, undeniably, provided the luxurious setup for the expatriates on one side, and totally disregarded the need for similar social amenities for the African workers. This case also brings to light an important ethical dilemma linking the business to the Environment. Of course, Kant would give the environment legal rights rather than moral rights (Paul Taylor’s point of view) which makes perfect sense when explaining the nature of the relationship between business and the environment. Businesses should always follow environmental law as this is something that can be universalized. In other words, I would think that Kant would urge the company to use the environment in moderation due to the Universalizability principle. In our study case, some conscientious shareholders concerned with the environmental impact of these rigs have complained indicating the seriousness of the environmental violations currently practiced by the company. In conclusion, in this area of business ethics, it is obvious that the company is using the African labor market in an attempt to maximize profits from the use of cheap labor. I would argue that Kant would disagree with such practice: my first reason is that Kant said you cannot use t he workers as a means to an end.Furthermore, they should be treated equally to those expatriates' workers from the western hemisphere. Several conditions must be satisfied in order to use the available foreign labor such as: i. Workers must freely choose to work with no added pressures from the local authorities, a common practice known all over the third world countries. ii. The work should be ‘meaningful’ and provide opportunities for all employees regardless of the country of origin. iii. All workers should be allowed to develop morally and physically. iv.The salary must be fair among all the employees based on the working conditions and qualifications. v. Finally leisure activities of some sort should be equally offered to all employees. In other words, applying the duty and goodwill to this case, will solve the issue of foreign labor exploitation and help establish a morally responsible company with solid sustainable goals. However, it is worth nothing that it is i mpossible to totally apply this theory to business ethics given the nature of Kantian ethics which makes it unrealistic to create firms not be driven by profit but rather by duty. Somalia and US Peacekeeping essays

Somalia and US Peacekeeping essays The desire for an organization that would help the international community avoid future conflicts and the recognized need for a global body that would promote international economic and social cooperation led the powerful states emerging from the rubble of WWII to develop the United Nations. The newly formed United Nations represented an expression of hope for the possibilities of a new global security arrangement and for fostering the social and economic conditions necessary for peace to prevail (Mingst and Karns 2). The need for mutual cooperation amongst the states following the second of the global wars was vital to the reconstruction of war-torn Europe, and for the development of a new world order. This attempt at cooperation was not the first of its kind. According to Mingst and Karns, The UNs Charter built on lessons learned from the failed League of Nations created at the end of World War I and earlier experiments with international unions, conference diplomacy, and dis pute settlements mechanisms (2). Despite this experience in mutual cooperation, the founding states still faced many problems in the security arena due to the advent of the Cold War. In order to effectively deal with security issues facing the UN, the Security Council turned to peace- keeping as an alternative to armed aggression. According to the United Nations Department of Public Information, Peacekeeping was pioneered and developed by the United Nations as one of the means for maintaining international peace and security (1998), and the UN deals with particular problems through the prevention, containment, and moderation of hostilities between or within states through the use of multinational forces of soldiers, police, and civilians (Mingst and Karns 3). This was a very different approach to quelling conflicts that had never before been pract...

Spy Jobs at the CIA

Spy Jobs at the CIA So, you want to be a spy. The first place most people hoping to land a spy job usually look is the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Though the CIA never has and never will use the job title â€Å"Spy,† the agency does hire a few select people whose job is to gather military and political intelligence from around the world- in essence, spies. Life as a CIA Spy While the CIA offers a wide range of more traditional job opportunities, its Directorate of Operations (DO), formerly called the National Clandestine Service (NCS), hires â€Å"Covert Investigators† who- by any means necessary- gather information needed to protect U.S. interests in foreign countries. This information is used to keep the President of the United States and Congress apprised of threats of terrorism, civil unrest, government corruption, and other crimes.   Once again, a CIA spy job is not for everyone. Looking only for â€Å"the extraordinary individual who wants more than a job,† the Directorate of Operations calls spying â€Å"a way of life that will challenge the deepest resources of your intelligence, self-reliance, and responsibility,† demanding â€Å"an adventurous spirit, a forceful personality, superior intellectual ability, toughness of mind, and the highest degree of integrity.† And, yes, a spy job can be dangerous, because, â€Å"You will need to deal with fast-moving, ambiguous, and unstructured situations that will test your resourcefulness to the utmost,† according to the CIA. ThoughtCo / Vin Ganapathy Careers at the CIA For people who consider themselves up to the many challenges of working as a spy, the CIA’s Directorate of Operations currently has four entry-level positions for qualified job seekers who have completed extensive agency training programs. Core Collectors and Operations Officers spend most of their time abroad recruiting, handling, and protecting persons who provide foreign HUMINT- human intelligence.Core Collectors and Collection Management Officers manage the work of the Core Collectors and Operations Officer, and evaluate and distribute the HUMINT they gather to the U.S. foreign policy community and intelligence community analysts.Staff Operations Officers act as liaisons between the CIA’s U.S. headquarters and field officers and agents overseas. They travel extensively and must be experts in either specific world regions or threats like terrorism.  Specialized Skills Officers might work anywhere using their military experience, or specialized technical, media, or language skills to conduct or support all CIA operations. Job titles in these areas include Collection Management Officer, Language Officer, Operations Officer, Paramilitary Operations Officer, Staff Operations Officer, and Targeting Officer. Depending on the position for which they applied, successful entry-level job candidates will go through the CIA’s Professional Trainee Program, the Clandestine Service Trainee Program, or the Headquarters Based Trainee Program. After successfully completing the training program, entry-level employees are assigned to a career track based matching his or hers demonstrated experience, strengths, and skills to the current needs of the agency. CIA Spy Job Qualifications All applicants for all CIA jobs must be able to provide proof of U.S. citizenship. All applicants for jobs in the Directorate of Operations must have a bachelors degree with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and qualify for government security clearance. Applicants for jobs involving gathering human information must be proficient in a foreign language- the more the better. Hiring preference is generally given to applicants with demonstrated experience in the military, international relations, business, finance, economics, physical science, or nuclear, biological or chemical engineering. As the CIS is quick to point out, spying is a career dominated by stress. People lacking strong stress management skills should look elsewhere. Other helpful skills include multitasking, time management, problem-solving, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Since intelligence officers are often assigned to teams, the ability to work with and lead others is essential. Applying for CIA Jobs Especially for spying jobs, the CIA’s application and vetting process can be trying and time-consuming.   Much like in the movie â€Å"Fight Club,† the CIA’s first rule of applying for spy jobs is never tell anybody you are applying for a spy job. While the agency’s online information never uses the word â€Å"spy,† the CIA clearly warns applicants never to reveal their intention to be one. If nothing else, this proves the future spy’s much-needed ability to hide his or her true identity and intentions from others. Jobs in the Directorate of Operations can be applied for online on the CIA’s website. However, all prospective applicants should carefully read about the application process before doing so. As an added level of security, applicants are required to create a password-protected account before proceeding with the application. If the application process is not completed within three days, the account and all information entered will be deleted. As a result, applicants should make sure they have all of the information needed to complete the application and plenty of time to do so.  In addition, the account will be disabled as soon as the application process is completed. Once the application is completed, applicants get an on-screen confirmation. No mail or email confirmation will be sent. Up to four different positions can be applied for on the same application, but applicants are asked not to submit multiple applications. Even after the CIA accepts the application, pre-employment evaluation and screening may take as long as a year. Applicants who make the first cut will be required to undergo medical and psychological testing, drug testing, a lie-detector test, and an extensive background check. The background check will be structured to assure the applicant can be trusted, cannot be bribed or coerced, is willing and able to protect sensitive information, and has not or ever has pledged allegiances to other countries. Because much of a CIA spy’s work is done covertly, even heroic performance rarely gets public recognition. However, the agency is quick to recognize and reward outstanding workers internally. Directorate of Operations employees serving abroad get competitive pay and benefits including lifetime health care, free international travel, housing for themselves and their families, and educational benefits for their family members.

Prohibited and restricted imports on meat to EU Essay

Prohibited and restricted imports on meat to EU - Essay Example Top-notch advisors have been appointed by the EU to work on policy formulation pertaining to import of meat. Moreover, market researchers have also been assigned the task of understanding consumers’ preferences for meat coming from Non-EU countries. This is because, by understanding consumer preferences, the EU aims at developing infrastructure that would ensure delivery of similar quality and taste of meat to their nation, as do the meat coming from Non-EU countries (Phyper, Ducas and Baish 260). Under the Regulation 765/2008 of EU, the importers of meat from Non-EU state are required to adopt a placement strategy that protects the meat from viruses and disease, if any, in the ecological environment. Moreover, EU provides levies on duties and taxes, in order to ensure that the pricing strategy adopted by the meat importers does not influence the purchasing behavior of the consumers (Goldmann 86-89). The department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is responsible to ensure t hat it dissects the true identity of the meat importers and their previous business record, just to ensure that there is no corruption or compromise on meat quality found in their business practices. If the department founds any discrepancy in the past record of meat importer or found bad quality product, it is empowered to cancel the license of the importer right away and prevent that the importer from placing the product in any market within the region (Thies 8-11). General marketing standards are also implied on the import of meat from Non-EU states, which requires an importer to conduct its marketing activities keeping in view the social and cultural differences. Moreover, the importer is also required to abide by the industry wide rules and regulations about ethical and healthy competition. If the importer (s) is found to be engaged in carrying out marketing activities that damages interest of competitors and other stakeholders, the EU has the power to cancel importer’s license without prior notice. Moreover, importers of the meat from Non-EU countries are also prohibited from form industrial curtail, just to ensure that synthetic increment in prices does not take place. The promotional campaigns of exported meat are required to be exhibiting health and safety standards that are kept in view, well before consumers purchase it. In addition, advertisements should also contain the approval seal of Department of Health and Safety of EU so that consumers may purchase it freely and without any concerns about its quality. The Department of Health and Safety carries out test of imported meat on time-to-time basis, just to ensure that quality and taste is not compromised at any stage (European Commission). In order to fulfill the legal requirements of importing meat from Non-EU states, the importers must meet following criteria: 1. The imported meat should contain the seal of conformity certificate issued by the Department of Health and Food Safety and Depa rtment of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. 2. The place where the product is going to be offered to the product should not be located near waste management centers and near rivers. This is because, these areas are the one where most of the diseases are born. 3. The price of the imported meat offered to consumers in EU is subjective to the Price Control Authority of EU, just to ensure t

Software to Support Assessment of the Comprehensive Classroom Essay

Software to Support Assessment of the Comprehensive Classroom Technology Plan - Essay Example I am supposed to click to and fro through many pages. I am forced to look at pictures of commodities whether I want to or not, whilst attempting to find the product that I need. As a student, I am bound to figure out that the design of this website is flat. Whilst the criteria are split into sub-segments, these sub-segments are not visually identified in navigation. Therefore, in the organization platform section, there is not a single item in the look of the course-plotting links to inform the student that all administration platforms are a different sub-segment from other types of administration platforms. Additionally, varying commodities exhibited and sold on this website are supposed to be the leading items even if it means navigating through this website through the â€Å"all† criterion. Every sub-segment is supposed to have its individual color piece so that it is distinct where the student is on the website (Williams, Boone and Kingsley, 2004, p. 213). Adding a â€Å" quick search† section would enable a student to simply list all commodities or services on one page. Utilizing the uncomplicated visual technology, it is likely to have the picture for every commodity come forth when the cursor is moved above the product. Visual recognition is still existent. The stocking of the commodity is slow and makes the impression of a heavy site. Is a student looks at the home page of a commodity’s criterion; there is a huge chance that they will look at the following page. Consequently, preloading the pictures for the following pages in the background will be helpful. Such an approach will make the pictures appear on the following pages. The commodity data is surrounded by exceedingly additional visual dialogue. It is similar to attempting to hear trades tone in a noisy room. The segment that deals with the number of people who purchased a certain commodity is very busy and distracts new students (Williams,
